Transitando Mundos

Transitando Mundos was a performance by SPAN 480 students at the University of Hawai'i and Manoa. Professor Aranzazu "Arantxa" Ascunce, director Frances Mammana and assistant director Ivonne Chambi guided the performers in giving the UH community a glimpse into Spanish literature and history.
The artistic performance featured Spanish students from México, Puerto Rico, Peru and Hawaii. The diversity added a strong and meaningful element to the audience, bringing the essence of Spain to Hawaii.
This was truly an amazing performance, it brought out and highlighted the creative side of some of my colleagues and friends Tyson Umberger, Rubén Cruz, Olivia Sanchez and Miguel Vieira. Bravo!

Ear Infections and Bronchitis

The past few weeks have flown by so quickly. I've finally finished my exams and trabajos finales. My family flew in from Guam to surprise mi abuelita and brought all sorts of airplane illnesses with them. Unfortunately, my brother and I caught ear infections and I developed a bad case of bronchitis. Luckily, I am now armed with antibiotics and ready to take on the world.

A few things that I am beating myself up over:
  1. Missing Craig Santos Perez' reading at the Mercury Bar
  2. Graduation parties for MASTER Becka Garrison and MISTRESS Laura Velázquez
  3. A toga event
  4. A slew of salsa & bachata events

My social life is now crumbling under immune system-reboot circumstances. I was told by the doctor that I still need sleep.

But there's so much to do...
  1. Study for the Master's Exam (*Ahem, in December, I would like to graduate and become a MASTER of Spanish Literature as well)
  2. Pack for my month long trip to Guam
  3. Start designing for some projects

LATINRAMEN's paella

Una amiga me pidió a darle mi receta para paella. Creo que es muy fácil de cocinar, en esta receta uso portuguese sausage en cambio de los chorizos. Es más "local" y da casi lo mismo sabor. Yo la escribió en inglés:

LATINRAMEN's paella

1 pkg saffron rice (2.5 cups) [*I buy this from Mercado de la Raza on Beretania Street]
1.5 cans chicken broth (2.5 cups)
8-12 shrimp (shelled)
1/2 bag of frozen peas
4 garlic cloves
10-12 green olives (sliced)
2 chorizo (I use portuguese sausage instead of chorizo)
salt
pepper
oregano

Empty saffron rice (do not wash, because it's already seasoned) with chicken broth into the rice cooker. Stir with a spoon to evenly mix seasoning with broth. Cook the rice. Meanwhile, sauteé the shrimp with butter, garlic, oregano, salt and pepper. Fry the sausage and drain oil with a paper towel, put to the side. Once the rice is cooked, let cool for about 10-15 minutes. Then mix and stir all ingredients into a paella pan (or a wok). *Toss as if you're making fried rice. Serve hot. Serves 3-4 people.

Mi trabajo de poesía, switching code & the last days of the semester.

[Photo credit: Voila and Black Ribbon, Red Bubble]

Term papers, final exam note-cards and packing have recently taken over my desk, bed and car! I'm currently drafting a term paper trata de la transición entre los temas religiosos y amorosos con las obras de algunos poetas del siglo XVI. Sorry about the spanglish, it's much easier to explain it in Spanish than in English.

I guess language classes do that to you. I'm solid proof that the brain does cartwheels and back handsprings in code-switching. Sometimes I can't explain something in English so I'll say it in Spanish and vice versa.

Aside from school, I hope that everyone is enjoying the holidays. Sadly for me, I haven't done any Christmas shopping - but I did get a chance to see Domingo DeGrazia perform at Ala Moana's Centerstage! I'll do a small review of that, post photos and videos up as soon as I get a chance.

Taking it back to the old school - really old school!

Rapping Spanish poetry from Brandi Nohealani Salas on Vimeo.

There's nothing I love more than putting a new spin on some old material.
