Don't Speak In My Bathwater

[Video: Taken by LATINRAMEN, No Doubt performs 'Bathwater.' A song about an ex-girlfriend's lingering feelings.]

It's No Doubt that the hottest ska band in American history rocked the socks off Honolulu for two nights straight. I was lucky enough to score a ticket to their first show! My father was the first No Doubt fan in the family. Before the internet came about, he used to make me listen to their songs and write down the lyrics to their music so his band can perform their songs at local venues.

It was after 'Don't Speak' (and much later, 'Bathwater') that I realized how important it was for women to express themselves. Gwen Stefani soon became one of my idols and I started to think about her vulnerability and how she transformed it into an iconic song for women.

I've been taught to strive to be a strong and invincible woman, who thinks of nothing but education and work, but sometimes I think a strong woman is entitled to be vulnerable.

Look at our lead singer, with her rock hard abs, musical success and clothing/accessory/perfume line, Stefani should have her own footnote under "success" in Webster's. But she is primarily (musically) known for writing those heart wrenching lyrics to her ex-boyfriend Tony, No Doubt's bassist/heartbreaker. She exposed her emotional situation and then POW! She's THE Gwen Stefani, the woman who's heartache bled into a number one hit.

So maybe it pays for us women to be a little vulnerable. That said, I say the biggest revenge is channeling our vulnerability into something productive & positive, getting defined abs and coming out of it a stronger and damn FIERCE diva (no side curls needed).
