culture-less.

"it sucks because i have no culture"

those exact words came out of one of my friend's mouth. he's one of those german/irish descendents who grew up without practicing any german or irish traditions.

what bothers me is that he speaks spanish almost fluently, can carry a conversation in japanese and he still tells me that he has no culture. his reason for being so immersed in other foreign cultures is because he wants to travel. well i personally believe that he created a culture of his own.

he complained about not growing up practicing a religion or tradition, like the rest of us and his parents did not pass on any knowledge of what his relatives did when they arrived in the U.S. well, put simply, it probably all came down to assimilation and in that sense, he feels like he was robbed of his own history, culture and the "what could have been."

sure, he could have been Roman Catholic and eaten reisbrei, but he really is doing something different and making up for all the "culture" he "doesn't have."

i would definitely define this guy "culturally open-minded." he is so interested in learning languages, engaging in other cultural activities and is so well-rounded. and seriously, where i come from, there are some people who really don't care about other people's traditions, simply because they don't take the time to understand them.

is there really such thing as being "culture-less?"
