THREE MONTH HIATUS - Future Events

LATINRAMEN.com will be going on a three month hiatus! This is my last semester at UH Manoa's Spanish Graduate program and I will be studying for the master's exam, a two day exam encompassing all Latin American and Spanish literary movements as well as their corresponding historical events. I need to pass this master's exam in order to graduate this December. 


As much as it pains me to postpone blogging until November, I need these next few months to focus on my exam and final projects. But I will not leave my readers in the dark (as far as social Hispanic and art events go) so here are the top upcoming MUST ATTEND Honolulu events in the next couple months:


The M.I.A. Art & Literary Series September Event
Wednesday, September 1st at Mercury Bar (1154 Fort Street Mall)
7:30 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Support UH Manoa's English Department by attending their monthly music and poetry event at Mercury Bar. Featured artists are Sage Takehiro, Brenda Kwon, Travis Kaululaau Thompson, Richard Hammasaki and Fred Ho.

We Value Hawai'i - Art/Music/Dialogue
Saturday, September 25 at Fresh Café (831 Queen Street)
1 p.m. to Sunday, 1 a.m.

We Value Hawai'i organization is hosting an event geared towards acknowledging and exploring issues in Hawaii. According to coordinators, "The idea is to create an event using Art and Music that will center around an open discussion panel including the writers of The Value of Hawai‘i, invited politicians, and YOU." Live entertainment lineup includes The Jump Offs, Deep Throat, Black Square, Narwhal, Youth Speaks Hawaii and more.  This event is a must for those who care about the future of Hawaii and supporting local artists.

Hispanic Heritage Festival & Health Fair
Saturday, October 9th at Kapiolani Park Bandstand
10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

This event is always a treat for locals and tourists on Oahu. I suggest arriving early in order to find parking because the live entertainment attracts people from all over the island. Nancy Ortiz of Alma Latina Productions is the coordinator of the festival and is planning a cultural explosion of food, music, dance and entertainment with sponsors Hawaii Hispanic News and Latin Business Hawaii. This is one event you MUST NOT miss because all proceeds of this event go to student scholarships given out by Hispanic organizations - think of it as a fundraiser for keiki and all Hawaii students.

Guamanian poet Craig Santos Perez to read his work at Mercury Bar this Wednesday

Guamanian poet Craig Santos Perez will be reading his work this Wednesday at the Mercury Bar. Tinfish Press, headed by University of Hawaii at Manoa professor Susan Schultz, coordinated his Honolulu appearance as part of the UHM English department's M.I.A. Art & Literary Series monthly event. "We teach his poetry here at UH Manoa, this would be a great opportunity for students to meet the actual poet who wrote the poems they read in class," said Schultz.

Schultz gave LR the opportunity to "peek" into her class, where Perez surprised her students and read some of his comedic essays. Stay tuned for a Q&A session with the established poet. Till then, check him out at the Mercury Bar this Wednesday, May 12th at 7:30 p.m.
