Lately, I've become interested in Portugal. This is the closest thing to Portugal for me. My grandmother, a woman who's deafeningly loud and rascal, proudly upholds the image of the stereotypical Portuguese woman, or in local slang, portagee. Makes me wonder if I'm going to be like that later in life. Good God! But you gotta love that woman.
She makes this cornmeal dish with watercress and swears it's a traditional Portuguese recipe. It's called milho frito and it is sooo good! My Maui-grown portagee grandmother knows how to make every dish yummy.
Another Portuguese delicacy I try to indulge in ONLY twice each year is the malasada. Who came up with that name? I haven't had the chance to investigate the origin of the word "malasada" but in Portuguese it's pão doce. Who cares, after all, we're all too busy enjoying that sugar dusty-lip treat to be concerned about it's name. Thank God for malasadas. They make an island local's world go round.
Anyway, I hope everyone is getting into the Christmas spirit! I sure am! I'll be leaving to Guam in about two weeks to visit my family and eat some delicious Chamorro food. I'll be lugging my camera and laptop so I'll definitely bring some Chamorro flavor to this blog!
