i entered the festival alone with my notepad, pen and digital camera. i was searching for my story, but everything was loud. i walked into the lanai of the venue and heard a mix of bachata on the salsa track, not as rĂ¡pida as the salsa music i had on my iPod.
everything was about PUERTO RICO. the red, blue and white colors bled into the McCoy Pavilion. but after walking a few circles around the pavilion, i was immediately mesmerized and drawn to this young couple rehearsing their routine in a small humid corner of the patio. it was then that i found the amazing hook and lead into my story.
if you find any interest in this at all, support the Hispanic Center of Hawaii , Nancy Ortiz (one of the coordinators & producers of the annual event) and all the latinos in Hawaii. latinos have had such a strong impact on Hawaii, culturally and socially. they bring flavor and zest to our islands, whether it's in their music, food or through business, they're making a difference all over Hawaii.
